Pohl's technical skills made him one of Hawaii's most respected artists. He painted the simple things of life in a deceptively simple manner-infused with significance. Pohl captured the look, the feel, and the spirit of Hawaii. His observations empathized a rhythmic union with nature. His art reveals and celebrates the deeper realities of life.
During Louis Pohl's lifetime, both Houses of the Hawaii State Legislature, the Honolulu Printmaking Workshop and the Kapiolani Community College recognized his leadership and community contributions as an artist and art educator by naming him a "living treasure." His approach to education was based on the assumption that everyone has creative abilities and potential. Limitations and competition were discouraged while honesty and spirit were valued. He helped his students develop sensitive awareness and an inquiring mind.Collograph Original Prints
Louis Pohl created a printing process by hand which most approached the art of painting and involved the artist without mechanical technology. He began experimenting in the 1960's, with the collage-like technique to make his original mixed media bird, volcano and sea series.
The collograph is essentially a textured relief made of found objects and templates which are glued to a cardboard, wood or metal backing plate. Ink is applied by rolling the relief surface using a tooth-brush, nail brush or brayer to rub the ink into the surface with appropriate ink for the application. As the collograph is physically high compared to etching plates, the plate is printed on damp paper to mould and pick up as much texture from the plate as possible.
