Drawn for a catalogue for Charlot exhibition of "Religious Paintings," Bonstell Gallery, New York, December 1940 - January 1941.
"It was an exhibition of my religious subjects. It included the Way of the Cross, fourteen tondo paintings now in a church, St. Cyprian, River Grove, near Chicago. Father Couturier, who wrote the introduction for this show, is famous now for bringing modern artists to do liturgical art...Just last year...private secretary to the pope was here. He asked, would I help him bring modern art into the Vatican. I said, 'By all means; I'll fresco a chapel for you.' So he said, 'Well, maybe that's too big.' I said, "Well then, I'll be glad to give you a portrait I made from life of Father Couturier.' He was delighted." (JC 1971)
