Na ‘Ili ‘Ili translates to “The Little Ones.” This charming, 2007, oil on linen by Ed Kayton is a view of a Hawaiian hula maiden with her ipo and 'uli'uli gourds by her side and holding her ‘ili‘ili rocks in hand, smoothed from river water, and used to add clicking sounds in time to the hula chant. Kayton is a realist artist and accomplished in many mediums, including oils, life drawing, printmaking, etching, sculpture and woodworking. He is a careful observer of Hawaiian culture and captures the dancers, performances, lei making, ritual sites, and Polynesian navigation in remarkable detail. His works are well exhibited in resort hotels and he had a special exhibition at Isaacs Art Center in 2020.
