Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy alumnus Harry Wishard ‘70, portrays an extraordinary view of snow-capped Mauna Kea in Days Gone By — Humu‘ula. The mauna is even colossally juxtaposed with the diminutive paniolo, herding a flock of sheep to Humu’ula Sheep Station. The view is vast with dramatic perspective, sun-saturated colors, and precise details that Wishard masters in all his paintings. Raised on Hawai‘i Island, Harry knows the topography well and represents our cherished landscapes with accuracy in every tree, hill, and figure. The clear light, careful shading, and site-specific detail evoke the vintage landscapes of Wishard’s renowned uncle and mentor, Lloyd Sexton.
The square format is a wonderful, modernist shape that engages the viewer to look at all aspects of the painting, circle, and focus on the center. This is a brilliant artwork that combines realism with the surreal scale, from the tiniest sheep to the powerful grandeur of Mauna Kea.
