We are fortunate to present you with a large Cook Pine calabash by one of the Big Island’s master wood artists Cliff Johns. Inspired by the rich cultural history and environment of Hawai‘i, Johns experiments with design and form while woodturning. This particular bowl goes under the variety name as Pu’ahala. It is generally taller than it is wide. Some are found with lids and all are used for food and personal item storage. Cook Pine is an evergreen that was introduced into Hawai‘i from New Caledonia. It is sometimes incorrectly labeled as Norfolk Island Pine. The wood is strong but light in weight and is usually interspersed with knots, adding a charming and unique textural pattern. This bowl is stunning!
