White Ginger reflects the breadth of Russell’s art studies and her superb talent in printmaking. To achieve the detail and subtle tones of white to ivory hues in the ginger flower requires great skill and patience. Shirley also worked with the renowned printmaker Shozaburo Watanabe who was a master in achieving both shaded and bold colors, especially the cobalt and teal blues evident in White Ginger and Russell’s companion woodblock print, Hibiscus.
