With a career of over fifty years, local fine artist Yvonne Cheng is known for her powerful depictions of Hawaiian women adorned in kapa and Polynesian textiles. To capture the stunning textile designs, Cheng used her native batik processes, acrylic painting, paper collages,
and ink drawing. This lovely serigraph epitomizes Yvonne Cheng’s mastery of fabric design, her subtle range of earth tones against the sky-blue background, and her creative details of the ipu hula and calabash held by these two women. Like Akua Wahine, goddesses of lore, her women exude a robust sensuality, gracefulness, and dignity that is mythical. Their grandeur is reminiscent of the power and beauty of Madge Tennent’s dynamic, grand wahine.
