Edwin B. Kayton

EDWIN KAYTON has been painting, drawing and sculpting for over 35 years. He studied at the Museum Art School in Portland, Oregon, graduating in 1967. His style, influenced by the works of Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Velasquez, combines their strong use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) with the bright pallete of the Impressionists.

The cultural renaissance in Hawaii, inspired by the voyages of Hokule`a, provide endless subjects for his palette. Frequent interaction with the Hawaiian community has resulted in thousands of reference photographs from which he creates endless compositions.

Kayton has also travelled annually to Italy where he paints plein aire, capturing the extraordinary atmosphere of this ancient land and its artistic treasures. Additionally, he makes time to teach 5 or 6 classes annually in Kailua-Kona not far from his residence in the southern district of Ka'u.
