Steven Neill
Steven Neill was born December 25, 1945 in Los Angeles, California into a family in love with the Pacific. His father owned one of the largest commercial sign companies in Orange County and was among the industry-leading journeymen working in their studio. Steven learned from the best how to be a fine lettering and gold leaf artist from his youth. He worked on Hollywood sets for films such as "The Spirit of St. Louis" lettering the reproduction of Charles Lindbergh's famous transatlantic plane and the vehicles used in "Catch 22". His family frequently ventured in the 50's and 60's to Polynesia living in Tahiti and Hawaii and working with his father who continued the lettering and screen print trade in the destinations they would reside in.
Steven often brought his own family to far away locals in the South Pacific until finally relocating to the Big Island in 1994 where he has translated his love of the Polynesia, graphic design and history into his own unique art form of vintage Hawaiiana signs. These pieces are intended as nostalgia representations of original advertisements and signs that were part of Hawaii during its 'Golden Days' of the late 1920's and 30's when Hawaii especially was discovered by visitors arriving on steamships and Pan Am Clippers.
