Painted following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Tennent’s Hawaiian women make a strong anti-war statement and plea for peace. She purposefully draws the contrast between the steel Brodie helmets (WWI) and budding heliconia.
It’s notable that Tennent also combined two canvases to create the painting—art supplies weren’t easy to come by during the war, and she was resourceful. -
