Lai Fong was one of the marine painters who worked for the captains and merchants of the oriental trade, painting portraits of their ships in oil on canvas. They were bases in Hong Kong, Shanghai or Canton. Lai Fong is the only one to have chosen Calcutta as his base.
This is an original example of the well-known China Trade paintings of the late 1800s. Displayed on the table below is a history of the Falls of Clyde, now moored in Honolulu at Pier 7.
