Fish traps were woven out of the aerial roots of the 'ie'ie vine. They were used in fresh water and in the ocean. Their sizes varied according to the fish to be caught. The stone on the bottom anchors the trap in the water and covers a hole where the fish are removed. Fish swim in through the top of the trap and once they are inside, they swim around in circles.
