The Beloved Mouse House Celebrates Our Holiday Spirit!

The enchanting Mouse Village, hand crafted by Martha Greenwell, is now on display at the Isaacs Art Center through January 7, 2017!

The magic, memories, and gifted artistry of this Christmas Village wonderland have returned to Isaacs Art Center for the season. It is a perfect time to remember and celebrate the many talents of our beloved island painter and friend, Martha Lowrey Greenwell, who gave her art to us with such generosity and humility. The display will be on view through January 7, 2017. This year there is an additional “Mouseville” tableau with rooftop birds peering into the house and enjoying the miniature scene of holiday festivities!

We invite “keiki young and old” to visit and share the sights of handmade mice in their miniature shops and homes that Martha fully decorated with tiny ornaments, wreaths, candies, and even Greenwell paintings! In learning that the “Mouse House” will be installed soon, visitors to Isaacs express their enthusiasm, “Every time we come to see Martha’s Village, there is something new to delight us.”

The Christmas village, affectionately known as “The Mouse House,” made its first Big Island appearance in December 2005 at the Kona Historical Society when the village returned to Greenwell from O‘ahu after more than 20 years of being part of an annual holiday tradition at the Queen’s Hospital Auxiliary’s “Festival of Trees.”

All of the artifacts featured in the display are from the attic and tool shed of Greenwell’s in-laws, Frank and Violet Greenwell of Palani Ranch. It took Greenwell eight years to assemble the village.

We look forward to welcoming you back and sharing our special gallery during the holidays and year round.
