Our historic 200-year-old kou wood calabash displays a unique beveled surface just below the lip of the bowl. This “line of beauty,” is often referred to as the “Maui or Kauaʻi style.” Calabashes were sacred to Hawaiian ali‘i and served ceremonial purposes, as well as food storage and presentation. This calabash hides untold stories, as seen in its deep color and restoration over time.
This Kou calabash is of substantial size, 8.5" height x 17” diameter and 54” circumference. The bowl has seven pewa, “butterfly,” patches along a seam that had once separated.
