40th Anniversary of "Banana Leaf 1979" is one of the first paintings in her Banana Leaf series that features her iconic style: flat planes of color, abstracted representational shapes, and a depiction of a lounging Hawaiian woman that ran counter to the common stereotypical “hula dancer” imagery. Her inspiration for “Banana Leaf 1979” originated from the organic shape of the leaf and using it as a motif that establishes the compositional elements in the rest of the piece.
