Anthurium paintings symbolize the dramatic beauty of Hawaiian flowers as seen in this oil on canvas by Emrich Nicholson (1913-2001). This striking multi-colored still life is painted with a spontaneous brushwork that mirrors the freedom of the orchid sprays. Inside a fish-shaped ceramic vase, the violet blue petals and green leaves frame the anthuriums, complementing and highlighting their rich red color. In his later life as a resident of Puako, Nicholson focused his artistic endeavors on vibrant images of flowers and Hawaiian landscapes. After a long and early, distinguished international career, including art direction for Paramount and Universal Studios, his works received wide recognition throughout Hawai’i. Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy has been fortunate to present his rare works when available.
