This light-infused watercolor by renowned California artist and Oscar-winning special effects designer Emil Kosa is a rare find for our auction. House in Puako displays masterful brushwork in the palm trees and the landscape. The extraordinary chiaroscuro achieved with the bright sunlight contrasted with the deep shadows engages the viewer in the beauty and ambiance of vintage Puako. We connect with this intimate painting and recall visiting people like those on the lanai of this welcoming home in relaxing, beautiful Puako.
Emil Kosa, Jr. was born in Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In the 1920s, he established an art studio in Los Angeles, taught at Otis and Chouinard Art Institutes, and enjoyed a 35-year career in special effects for 20th Century Fox, winning an Oscar for Cleopatra in 1968! Kosa became a renowned California watercolorist and likely visited his friend Millard Sheets at Puako, Hawai‘i, in the ‘50s!
