This native bird from China and Japan is found on all islands of Japan and Hawai’i; they thrive in dry areas below 7000 feet. Sometimes known as the “pake or chinese quail”, they will hold fairly well for a pointing dog before buzzing off in a flat, low trajectory. Hunters will encounter them in grazed pasturelands and in cattle and horse tracks where they will be digging for insects and seeds, flushing generally in pairs. Scientifically, they are referred to as Coturnix Quail.
