John Kelly’s serene, stylized prints are among the most ubiquitous visions of Hawaii. Reproductions of his “native life” scenes, several of which were commissioned as menu covers for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, decorate many homes and hotels. However, only the original aquatints can fully convey the precise registry and sensitive artistry that distinguish Kelly from his peers. To him, the tribute to Hawaiians’ cooperative values justified the tribulation of setting separate plates for every color.
Framed in Koa.
