Hawai‘i Island master weaver and wood artist, David Young, shares with us his finely woven “blonde” lauhala hat. Pandanus, or hala, products have recently become very popular again since they showcase a valued tradition of our islands— from hats, to floor mats, to purses, to baskets, and more. It has become quite a sensation to see local residents and visitors adorned in a fine lauhala hat and especially adorned with a feathered lei hatband. David is also a member of our HPA ʻOhana. Presented here is Young’s well-crafted lauhala hat and a treasure that should last for the ages. Using traditional Hawaiian plaiting techniques passed down through generations, lauhala items are unique to our islands. Lauhala means “leaf of the hala or pandanus tree”. The leaves are selected according to their length, width, color, texture and pliability. Preparation before the weaving process includes gathering, trimming, cleaning, de-thorning, softening, sorting, and stripping. The best products have not been dyed or bleached.
