We present a colorful, soft, grey-dyed Goose lei hulu (feather hatband lei). It has yellow-dyed Goose accents and was
made by a Hawaiian artisan in 1990. Feathered lei of superior artistry and provenance are treasures that command and retain solid values. This is a humu papa (flat stitch) Goose feather lei, a modern variant of Hawaiian featherwork. These feathered hat bands would have logically developed as Western explorers, and traders introduced thread and metal needles into the Islands. The use of pheasant and other varieties of imported, upland game birds made their way into the hatbands of paniolo (cowboys) and ranchers in the late nineteenth century.
