“HIWAHIWA”
The girl holding her baby in this painting is the daughter of Makalapua Kanuha, the Cultural Director of Westin properties in Ka’anapali, who organized a major photo shoot of 30 members of her ‘ohana (the Kapu ‘ohana) on the grounds of Old Lahaina Lu’au grounds in Lahaina in 2014. She asked Maka what to do with her 6-mo. old baby during the photo shoot and was encouraged to bring her along. Ed got 1,000 photos from this event in which the participants re-enacted the trades as they would have been done during the time of Kamehameha. (We send framed giclees of these paintings to each person as Ed completes them.)
