Louis Pohl was a professor at the Honolulu Art Academy, which he helped found. In 1994, he was honored by the Hawai?i State Legislature as a Living Treasure for his lifetime achievements and contribution to the arts in Hawai?i.
Pohl devoted his career to the depiction of this main themes: volcanoes, the sea, and children. He was not a plein-air painter (painters who paint outside, their canvas on an easel) but instead he internalized a landscape, allowing his mind to recreate a fictional landscape which he then painted in the tranquility of his studio. Thus his landscapes are often etheral, reflecting the essence, rather than the image, of the world around him.
