Waimea’s own Margaret Fleming Waldron (1910-1992) had a distinguished career in artistic creation and design, including being chosen as the artist coordinator for the Hawaiʻi Pavilion at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962. Her detailed and colorful paintings of flowers and rural scenes showcase her great talent, and her perception and fluid brushwork depicting her town of Waimea will long endear her to our community. For the Honolulu Gump’s store, Waldron was able to decorate silver with meticulous floral patterns while also merging abstraction with accurate depictions in her paintings. Horse in the Mist reflects this quintessential quality of Waldron’s art; it presents an impressionist atmosphere, exquisite light-filled colors, and a wonderful rendering of a lone horse grazing on a misty morning in upcountry Waimea— a memorable scene in our cherished town.
