Lā’au lapa’au
A very powerful image from ancient Hawai'i. Its collection history is unknown but Adrienne Kaeppler, the noted
authority on Cook Voyage artifacts, considers it to be a possible Hawaiian Cook voyage collection. Note the three raised points on the rim. This feature was used to denote a medicine container. The design of this container is another example of the Hawaiianʻs refinement in art. These wooden carvings earned the owner more mana and respect.
This piece is in the British Museum in London.
Carved from Kou.
